A coupon lets you give customers a discount through a code. The customer enters the code at checkout. The discount applies to the whole order, or only to products you choose: one product, a category or a segment you build yourself with tags.
Where do coupons work?#
Customers enter a coupon code on the Webshop and on the Unikiosk. You don't use coupons on Unipos PLUS: if you want to give a discount at the POS, use the POS's own discount functions. You can never top up a wallet with a coupon.
Good to know
Orders with a coupon arrive at the POS as normal, including the discount. A coupon on the whole order appears as a single discount line on the receipt. A coupon on specific products appears per product line, with the correct VAT treatment.
Creating a coupon#
Go to Marketing, Coupons on the management page and click Voeg coupon toe (Add coupon).
Coupon code: choose a code yourself, for example FRIETJES10. We fill in a random code for you. Use the button next to the field to generate a new one.
Type: choose % korting (% discount) or Bedrag korting (Amount discount).
Discount: enter the percentage or the amount in euros.
Applies to: choose what the discount applies to (see below).
Click Save.
Only the code, the type and the discount are required. All other settings are optional.
What does the discount apply to?#
Under Applies to you can choose from:
Volledige bestelling (Whole order): the default. The discount is deducted from the total.
Specifieke producten (Specific products): one or more products that you select yourself.
Specifieke categorie (Specific category): all products from the chosen categories, for example all burgers.
Specifieke tag (Specific tag): all products with a certain tag (see further on).
Other (advanced): you combine products, categories and tags in rules, optionally with extra conditions such as a minimum number of items.
If you choose anything other than the whole order, the question Welke producten krijgen de korting? (Which products get the discount?) appears:
Alle producten die in aanmerking komen (All eligible products): every matching product in the basket gets the discount.
Alleen het goedkoopste product (1x) (Only the cheapest product (1x)) or Alleen het duurste product (1x) (Only the most expensive product (1x)): exactly one item gets the discount. Handy for a promotion like "one free burger".
Under Productdoelen (Product targets) you then select the products, categories or tags. You can't save a product coupon without a target.
Targeted discounts with tags#
A tag works like a segment that is separate from your fixed categories. You enter the tag on the product card, and one tag can combine products from different categories. For example, create the tag "non-alcoholic" and assign it to soft drinks and alcohol-free beers. If you link a coupon to that tag, the discount automatically applies to every product with that tag.
Optional restrictions#
Below the discount there are three checkboxes that let you restrict the use of the code.
Limiet instellen (Set limit): under Aantal keer te gebruiken (Number of times it can be used), enter how many times the code may be used in total. This counts across all customers combined, not per customer. If you leave it at 0, the code can be used without limit.
Vervaldatum instellen (Set expiry date): choose an Vervaldatum (Expiry date). The code stays valid up to and including that day, until 23:59.
Minimum bestelbedrag instellen (Set minimum order amount): under Minimum bestelbedrag (Minimum order amount), enter the amount from which the code works, for example 25.
Good to know
The minimum order amount only looks at the products in the basket, including VAT and chosen options. Service and delivery costs and tips don't count. A basket of exactly the minimum qualifies. This works for every coupon, including a coupon on specific products.
If the customer is below the minimum, they see this next to the coupon code: "Deze coupon is geldig vanaf een bestelbedrag van € 25,00 (exclusief kosten)." (This coupon is valid from an order amount of € 25.00 (excluding costs).) If the customer then removes products from the basket so the amount drops below the minimum again, the discount is removed automatically and the same message appears.
What your customer sees#
The customer enters the code at checkout and clicks Validate. If the code works, a Discount line appears with the code and the amount. The customer removes the coupon again with the bin icon.
With a coupon on specific products, the discount only applies to those products. If a customer orders a Bicky Fish and a Spa rood with a coupon for fish snacks, the discount only comes off the Bicky Fish. The customer then sees per product how much discount was applied.
If the code has expired, been used up or is unknown, the customer sees "Coupon is invalid". If a product coupon matches nothing in the basket, the customer sees the same message.
Only one coupon can be used per order. You can't combine a coupon with loyalty points. Offers do work together with a coupon.
What you see#
In the list under Marketing, Coupons you see the type, the discount, Valid until, Min. bestelbedrag (Min. order amount) and Aantal keer gebruikt (Number of times used) for each coupon. The last one counts every placed order in which the code was used. For online payment, the order only counts after a successful payment.
In the order overview, a coupon on the whole order appears as a single Discount line with the code next to it. For a product coupon, the discount is listed separately per product line, with a correct VAT calculation on the remaining amount.
Coupons belong to your product catalogue. If you have several businesses that share the same products, the code works in all of them.
Frequently asked questions
Can I limit a coupon to once per customer?
No. The limit under Set limit counts across all customers combined. If you want a code for one customer, create a separate code with a limit of 1.
My customer says the coupon doesn't work. What should I check?
In the list, check Valid until, Min. order amount and Number of times used against the limit you set. For a product coupon: is there a matching product in the basket? And is there already a loyalty points reward on the order?
Do delivery costs count towards the minimum order amount?
No. Only the products in the basket count, including VAT and options. Service and delivery costs and tips don't count.
My customer enters a gift voucher in the coupon code field.
A gift voucher is not a coupon but a payment method. If you have the wallet active, the webshop recognises the code and suggests redeeming the gift voucher into the customer's wallet.
Can I disable a coupon without deleting it?
There is no switch for that. Set an expiry date in the past, or set the limit equal to the number of times the code has already been used.
