Mistake 1: using the Wi-Fi booster or pod from your internet provider

Many venue owners use the Wi-Fi booster or pod provided by their internet provider. Fine at home, but not suited for a hospitality environment. When your POS, payment terminal and guest Wi-Fi all run on the same device, the network struggles at the moments that matter most. These devices simply aren't built for professional use.

The better approach: a professional Wi-Fi device connected via cable to your network, placed by someone who knows where the weak spots are in your venue. The investment is higher, but your POS and terminals run reliably, even when the place is full.

Mistake 2: not laying enough network cable during a renovation

This is the mistake that costs the most to fix after the fact. An extra network cable and wall socket cost little during renovation work. Waiting until the walls are closed costs considerably more. Our installers always give the same advice: lay more connection points than you think you need, at every location where a device could be placed now or in the future.

Think about the counter, the kitchen, the bar, the terrace, a side room for events. A cable in the ceiling, right next to a Wi-Fi device, is a smart option: devices placed high up broadcast better than those mounted on the wall at shoulder height. Cat6 cable is the current standard for professional networks.

Mistake 3: relying on Wi-Fi in a kitchen with metal equipment

A running fryer, a microwave, stainless steel surfaces, steel kitchen cabinets: these all block Wi-Fi signals. Metal reflects and absorbs radio waves, creating dead zones in precisely the places where you need the connection. In a chip shop or restaurant, the kitchen is therefore one of the worst places to rely on Wi-Fi for a POS system or kitchen screen.

Mistake 4: confusing speed with stability

"My internet is 600 Mbps, surely that's more than enough?" That's true for downloads and streaming, but not necessarily for a POS system. Speed and stability are two different things. You can theoretically reach 600 Mbps on a connection that experiences brief drops every few minutes.

For a POS system that continuously transmits data, it's not the speed that matters but the ongoing stability of the connection. With GKS 2.0, the fiscal data module continuously transmits transaction data to the Belgian Tax Administration's cloud. Any interruption in that transmission is a potential problem for your fiscal registration. A stable 50 Mbps connection is more useful for a POS system than an unstable 600 Mbps connection. Mistake 5: putting POS and guest Wi-Fi on the same network

On a busy Saturday evening, dozens of guests connect their phones at the same time. If that's on the same network as your POS and payment terminals, it pulls bandwidth away at the moment you can least afford the slowdown.

Two separate networks, one for your POS and terminals and one for your guests, solve this problem durably. It's also a requirement: the international security standard for payment terminals requires that payment data be separated from the guest network (Worldline on PCI DSS).

Mistake 6: not setting up a 4G backup

This is one of the simplest protections available: low cost and high impact. Telenet and Proximus offer a 4G backup as an option on business internet subscriptions: you request it, they activate it on your router. As soon as your fixed connection drops, the system automatically switches to 4G, without any action required.

On a busy evening when your provider has an outage, the difference between having and not having a 4G backup is the difference between working normally and shutting everything down. Mistake 7: placing Wi-Fi devices in the wrong location

Wi-Fi devices should be placed as high as possible, preferably in the ceiling. From there, they broadcast in all directions without walls, furniture or people getting in the way. A device mounted on the wall at shoulder height has a much more limited range.
