# Modifiers and modifier groups

With modifiers, you let the customer make a choice on a product: the sauce with a snack, the filling on a sandwich, the toppings on a pizza. You can create a modifier directly on the product page, but we recommend working with **modifier groups**: you link one group to as many products as you like, and you only have to make changes in one place.

## An example

Say you sell a **Bakje friet** (a tray of chips) for 2,00 euro in three sizes. Instead of three separate products, you create one product with an add-on **Size**:

- **Small**: the base price of 2,00 euro
- **Medium**: + 1,00 euro
- **Large**: + 2,00 euro

Your customer must choose one size, and the price adjusts automatically: on the webshop, at the kiosk and on the POS.

Want more choice on the same product? Feel free to add extra add-ons: **Sauces** with the options Mayonnaise and Ketchup (each + 0,50 euro), or a free question such as **Would you like salt on your chips?** with Yes or No. This is exactly how the Bakje friet in the examples above is built.

## The terms

- **Modifier group**: the bundle you create and link to products. The name is internal: your customer does not see it.
- **Add-on**: a choice group within the modifier group, such as Size or Sauces. Your customer sees this question on the webshop, POS and kiosk.
- **Option**: one choice within an add-on, such as Mayonnaise. You can create an option separately with its own price, or you can use an existing product as an option: it automatically follows its own product price.

## Creating a modifier group

1. Go to [Products, Modifiers](https://beheer.unipage.eu/deeplink/addon-groups) on the management page.
2. Click **New modifier group** (Nieuwe variatiegroep).
3. Give the modifier group a name. This is an internal name: your customer does not see it. The names of the add-ons and the options do appear on the webshop, POS and kiosk.
4. Choose the type:
- **1 choice**: the customer must choose exactly one option. The first option is the default choice.
- **Multiple choices**: the customer chooses freely, or within a **minimum and maximum**. For example: at least 2 and at most 4 toppings.
- **Number**: a number is entered instead of a choice being made, free or with a price per unit.
5. Add your choices:
- **Add an option** for separate options with their own price.
- **Add a product** to offer existing products as a choice: choose the category, select the products and click **Add**.
6. Drag the options into the right order using the dots on the left.
7. Click **Save**.

> **Tip:** Is an option also a separate product in your range, for example a can of soft drink? Then click **Link a product** (Koppel een product) next to the options instead of typing a new option. The name, price and VAT are copied automatically, which saves time. And because the option stays linked to the product, it is neatly included in your [stock management](/en/support/unipos-plus/orders-and-kitchen/stock-management).

How optional modifiers appear on the POS, as a popup or in the side panel next to the receipt, is explained in [Product management on the POS](https://unipage.be/en/support/unipos-plus/getting-started/product-management-on-the-pos).

## Prices of options

- An option can have a **surcharge**, be **free**, or even have a **negative price** (a discount when an ingredient is left out).
- A **product** as an option always automatically follows its own product price. You cannot set this separately here.

## Linking modifier groups to products

1. Go to [Products](https://beheer.unipage.eu/deeplink/producten) and choose a category.
2. Tick the products, or select everything using the checkbox next to **product** at the top.
3. Click **More actions** (Meer acties) and then **Modifier groups** (Variatiegroepen), choose the group and confirm.

If you link several groups, the order in which you click them determines their order on the POS and webshop.

## Product per number or per person

Do you sell something per person or per item within one order, such as a basket of sandwiches by number of people?

1. Create a product with a **base price of 0 euro**.
2. On the product page, go to **Specific modifiers for this product** (Specifieke variaties voor dit product) and choose the type **Number**.
3. Set the minimum and maximum (for example at least 4, at most 15 people) and set the **price per unit** on the option itself (for example 14 euro per person).
4. Check the VAT rate and set the product to available.

The customer chooses a number within your limits and the total is calculated automatically. Warning: this set-up is not suitable for tiered discounts (cheaper per item for larger quantities).

A number does not have to cost anything, by the way. For a bottle of wine, for example, ask for the number of **glasses** (0 euro): your staff member enters '3 glasses' with the order, and the bar immediately knows how many glasses to bring.
